At the plenary session of the European Parliament on April 18, the EU High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, reiterated the EU’s positions on both the US decision to recognize the Golan as Israeli territory and, the Israeli government settlements policy in the West Bank.
Concerning the Golan, EU reiterates its simple and precise position that " does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over any of the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967, in accordance with international law and resolutions 242 and 497 of the United Nations Security Council. And this also applies to the Golan Heights ".
Federica Mogherini denounced the evolution on the ground of colonization in the occupied West Bank. "In recent months, Israeli settlement construction has continued. Just last week, the Israeli authorities proposed the construction of more than 4,600 new settlements. We immediately reiterated that "we judge illegal settlement activity under international law and the settlements undermine the viability of the two-state solution. ». In fact, the two-state solution is not just weakening. It is dismantled piece by piece, "she added «our first duty is therefore to maintain the perspective of the two States and to preserve the possibility of further negotiations for peace," she concluded.
