Trade unions on both sides of the Mediterranean are organizing to support the Algerian people

European trade union organizations affiliated to the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and Arab trade union organizations affiliated to the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC), a stakeholder of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), took part in seminar organized by  Solidar on 9 and 10 April in Marseille.


Participants analyzed the human and trade union rights situation in MENA (Middle East and North Africa) and heard representatives of ATUC organizations from Palestine, Libya, Morocco, Algeria and Jordan. In addition to the ETUC's contribution, representatives of trade unions from Spain, France, Belgium and Italy also spoke.

Regarding the situation in Algeria and its significant repercussions throughout the region, the participating organizations signed a declaration of support to the Algerian people. They praised the massive peaceful uprising of Algerian society - including the independent trade union movement - in its quest for freedom, dignity and democracy.


The participants in this meeting also discussed the results of the SOLID project and the development of the ongoing Majalat project.
