Good governance and rule of law

Ihsane El-Kadi, director and founder of the Interface Médias agency, which publishes the websites Maghreb Emergent and Radio M, was arrested last week in Zemmouri, inBoumerdes, about 60 km east of Algiers.

Handcuffed, the journalist was taken to the agency’s headquarters, which was searched by agents of the Algerian Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI). The computer and filming equipment of both media were seized and the premises were sealed.

Two hours before his arrest, Ihsane El-Kadi was summoned by telephone to report to the Antar barracks. When he did not show up, because he was far from the capital, he was eventually arrested at his home by DGSI agents.

While the authorities gave no official explanation for this arrest, Radio M and Maghreb Emergent recalled that Ihsane El-Kadi has been the subject of judicial harassment for several years.

Last June, the journalist was sentenced to six months in prison without a detention order and fined 50,000 dinars (322 euros) for an opinion article published in March 2021.
