Migration and mobility

In a press conference held on Thursday 21 July 2022 in Rabat, Omar Naji, from the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), stated that “the tragedy of 24 June cost the lives of 27 migrants due to unprecedented repressions by the Moroccan authorities with the complicity of their Spanish counterparts.”

Denouncing “deadly migration policies,” Omar Naji explained that the report prepared by the AMDH on the Melilla tragedy clearly reveals that "the decision to violently attack asylum seekers once they arrived at the barrier is undoubtedly the main cause behind the very heavy toll.”

It is worth noting that the National Human Rights Council of Morocco (CNDH),the official Moroccan body in charge of investigating the tragedy, concluded that the migrants died of “mechanical asphyxiation,” mainly in the buffer zone of the border post. Its investigation ruled out the responsibility of the Moroccan law enforcement agencies and pointed to the responsibility of the Spanish authorities, who kept the border crossing closed.
