Migration and mobility

In a statement issued on 24 August, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) stated that more than 2,000 Tunisian minors have crossed the Mediterranean to Italy in just eight months. The number of minors who managed to reach Italy by crossing the Mediterranean has quadrupled in five years.

A total of 10,139 Tunisians, including 498 women, have been able to reach the Italian coast since the beginning of the year, the FTDS said, adding that more than 14,700 irregular migrants, including many sub-Saharan Africans, have been intercepted in their crossing and 443 have died or gone missing during the same period, according to the same source.

It is worth noting that the European border guard agency (Frontex) revealed that more than 42,500 migrants took the central Mediterranean route between January and July, 44% more than in the first seven months of 2021.
