NGOs and Italian authorities have announced that more than a thousand migrants have landed in Italy in the last few hours while hundreds of others, rescued by humanitarian ships, are waiting for a port of refuge.

On Saturday, a merchant ship and the Italian coastguard rescued more than 600 people trying to cross the Mediterranean on a drifting fishing boat off the coast of Calabria, in the far south of Italy.

On the island of Lampedusa, 522 people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia arrived on Saturday night on board fifteen different boats from Tunisia and Libya.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior has announced that between 1 January and 22 July 2022, 34,000 people arrived in Italy by sea, compared with 25,500 in the same period in 2021 and 10,900 in 2020.
