Good governance and rule of law

Moroccan blogger Fatema Karim, 39 years old, has been sentenced to two years in prison for “offending the Muslim religion” after posts on Facebook deemed offensive to Islam.

Fatema Karim was questioned by the police on 15 July and has been in detention since then. She was tried for satirically commenting in Arabic on her Facebook page on verses from the Quran and hadiths of the Prophet Mohammed, which are considered sacred in the Muslim tradition.

The blogger, who plans to appeal the verdict, invoked her right to freedom of expression, guaranteed by the Moroccan constitution, before the judge, her brother told AFP. She also publicly apologised to “anyone who felt offended” by her posts, saying she never intended to undermine Islam, the state religion in Morocco.
