Security and countering violence

US Democratic Party lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill to push the United States to conduct its own investigation into the murder of US-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot dead on 11 May while covering an Israeli military attack in the occupied West Bank.

Conceding that their proposal was unlikely to pass, given that a previous attempt via an amendment to a defence bill had already failed, the elected representatives explained that the bill would allow US authorities to conduct their own investigation to determine the source of the fatal shooting.

“We call on our colleagues to consider it as freedom of the press,” Democrat Andre Carson told the press, “to put aside the political gamesmanship around Israel and Palestinians and uniquely consider it as an attack on independent journalism and the murder of one of our countrymen.”

Shireen Abu Akleh’s family travelled to Washington this week to call for an investigation into the murder.
