Spanish maritime rescue services have announced that they rescued 380 people attempting to reach the Canary Islands in makeshift boats between Sunday 16 and Monday 17 October.

A boat carrying 52 people was rescued on Monday morning off the volcanic island of Lanzarote, which is increasingly attracting migrants seeking to reach Europe by crossing the Atlantic.

Spain’s EFE news agency said in the afternoon that two boats had been rescued east of Lanzarote with a total of 69 people on board, including four women.

On Sunday, 124 migrants on board a boat were rescued off the island of El Hierro and transferred to the port of La Restinga. Another group of 140 people on their way to the island of Lanzarote in a small boat. Two other boats were intercepted and taken to Arrecife.
