Good governance and rule of law

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tunisia must address concerns about its democratic system before it can qualify for the needed international economic aid.

Speaking before a House of Representatives committee, Antony Blinken expressed concern about the assumption of full powers by Tunisian President Kais Saied and said Tunisia should “at least” hold the promised parliamentary elections before the end of the year. He added that I “the most important thing for them is to make themselves fully eligible for aid from the international financial institutions.”

The Biden administration has recently hardened its criticism of Kais Saied, calling in late March for a swift return to a “constitutional government” in Tunisia.
