Good governance and rule of law

In a press conference held on 16 August, the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE)announced that the new Constitution proposed by the President Kais Saied was adopted with 94.6% of the votes. The electoral authority also confirmed that the turnout was 30.5%.

The text, which significantly strengthens the powers of the head of state, will enter into force after its promulgation by the president and its entranceto the official gazette.

Opposition parties, which called for a boycott of the 25 July elections, denounce the increasingly authoritarian exercise of power by Kais Saied, who has notably suspended parliament since July 2021, and replaced the Supreme Council of the Judiciary with a ‘temporary’ body while giving himself the power to dismiss judges.
